Online Advertising with Google AdWords

One of the most popular “bid for placement” online advertising campaigns is Google AdWords. Google’s AdWord ads are the links that get displayed in the right column of a Google search results page. In addition, Google runs “Sponsored Links” at the very top of the page before the search results. These dominant ads are displayed in a light blue box along the top of the page.

The benefits of a Google AdWords campaign are:

• A nominal activation fee ($5.00)
• No minimum spending or time commitment
• Daily budget and maximum cost-per-click (CPC) that you set (5 cents to $50.00)
• Pay only for clicks
• Stop or pause campaign at any time

So how much does a campaign cost?

When you bid on a term or phrase you are telling Google the maximum you are willing to pay for the click against others who have bid on that term. Google will assist during this process in giving estimates of what your CPC would be depending on the keyword/phrase. The more popular the keyword, the higher the CPC. You are always able to lower the CPC to what you want to pay as well as set the daily budget. When you have reached your budget for the day, your ad will not be displayed.

Once you know what works, you can start to build more campaigns to attract your potential customers. In addition, ads earn their position based on performance CTR (clickthrough rate) and CPC, so when you have a strong performance history, you could end up paying less to maintain the position of your ads.

Because Google AdWords are easy and fast to create, you can test, change and adjust the ads as much as you would like. In addition to the primary purpose of driving traffic to your web site, the Google AdWords can be a fast and inexpensive way of testing messages, offers and positioning to be used in other advertising venues. For example, if you are not sure if people would respond to an ad worded one way or another, you could try using the different phrases in a couple of Google AdWords campaigns to see which one performs better. Not only is this a fast and inexpensive way of testing, it also creates value as you test, since the test will also drive traffic to your web site.
